The Green Mile
So familiar, yet so different and characteristic of King!
What strikes me first is the similarity between this book and Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" because of the big, big man that means no harm at all. Well, it turns out they are quite different, of course. Another thing that is so familiar to me is the miracle part. I read something similar in Jodi Picoult's book "Change of Heart," but of course Picoult's work is of a later date. But I have to say King is really a wonderful storyteller and he is really good at psychological description of his characters. They are just so alive to me! I just wonder if he has ever written a story featuring a woman/girl as the first-person narrator. Everything I've read by him is either narrated by the third person or by a male "I". What is especially as well as "painfully" impressive for me is certainly the Green Mile walk part. I read the book "Dead Man Walking" by Sister Helen Prejean last summer and felt really terrible about the death sentence. And here it is, another book about the capital punishment, but presented in a different way and no less powerful! There are three "walks" in this book and I never felt being able to get used to it as I read on. I just kept thinking, "This is too much!" One more thing to mention is all this "cussin'" and "swearin'" in the book that somehow embarrassed me a lot. It goes without saying that this is a story that happens in a prison and that there must be a lot of such language. I will never say such things. I am just afraid that such words will just apprate in a dark corner in my brain when I am faced with really unpleasant situations these days. A language teacher is certainly very good at picking all this stuff! And of course there are things that I don't understand that belong to the culture itself. King makes use of this generously so as to achieve a vivid picture of the American life, but it is of course not much use to me. But I would say it does not really affect my understanding of the whole book. So I'll just bear with it and enjoy my reading.
